About Our Services
The Department of Multicultural Services understands each student comes to Texas A&M University with a unique set of intellectual abilities, sense of physical and emotional well-being, attitude toward academic readiness, financial situation, and collection of other factors. These factors merge, creating diversity among student abilities to fulfill potential in educational settings. To ignore this diversity could impact student self-concept, confidence, self-esteem and attitude toward learning, yielding negative affects on academic performance. One approach to aid in closing this gap is to recognize this diversity by providing individualized student services, with a focus on active and engaging information transfer, keeping personal learning styles and perspective in the forefront.
The Tutoring Program is a free tutorial service provided by the Department of Multicultural Services and Office of Honors and Academic Programs designed with these elements in mind. The program bridges the gap between student performance and academic expectations for students having academic difficulty. The program provides consistent one-on-one and small group tutoring from students, trained on educational diversity and learning styles, pre-screened on their ability to develop a positive working relationship and serve as academic role models.
The Tutoring Program is designed to facilitate student academic success by providing personalized academic assistance and course-specific peer tutoring. This facilitation assists students in the development of study habits:
- Essential to success in coursework, increasing the likelihood of retention to graduation.
- Positively impacting academic performance.
- Improving attitudes and confidence levels in personal abilities.
- Transitioning students to the pace and difficulty of college work.
